Mission
The Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council (Mid-MEAC) is a non-profit environmental
organization dedicated to improving the environment and quality of life by raising environmental
consciousness and activism. Mid-MEAC provides individuals and communities concrete and
practical ways to help the environment. Programs focus on River Protection, Trails & Greenways/
Green Transportation, and Sustainable Business.
History
- Earth Day 1993: a core of eight Mid-Michigan citizens founded the Mid-Michigan Environmental
Action Council. They saw a need for organized, grassroots environmental action in the tri-county
(Clinton, Eaton and Ingham) region.
- 1994-1996: Began river clean-ups, monthly newsletter (Environmental News), environmentally
preferred purchasing program, land use committee and energy efficiency outreach.
- 1997: hosted monthly brown bag lunch speaker series, coordinated "wet-cleaning" project with
local dry cleaners.
- 1997-1999: created and distributed over 1800 copies of the "Riparian Handbook" to homeowners
along the Red Cedar River, to help them understand how to protect water quality.
- 1998-2002: coordinated “Adopt a River”, a biannual river cleanup with the Lansing Board of Water
and Light.
- 2001: created a strategic plan with goals and objectives for 2001-2008.
- 2002: began water quality testing program, storm drain labeling, trails and greenways committee,
and the Central Michigan Sustainable Business Forum.
- 2003: held roundtable meetings for business owners and citizens regarding trails and greenways
and began green infrastructure mapping project.
- 2003: implemented the Energy Star product promotional campaign and held Green Building
Conference and Expo for Lansing area builders. Organized monthly breakfasts for environmental
professionals and activists, held quarterly member nights, redesigned the quarterly newsletter and
started an environmental television program.
- 2004: published and distributed the Mid-Michigan Trails and Greenways Map, conducted a Trail
Use Study, helped organize the Global Warming Awareness Rally at the state capitol and held follow-
up meetings for members and activists concerned about climate change, held the Heart of Michigan
Trails Summit.
- 2005: Smart Commute Week, Heart of Michigan Trails Committee, securing funding to continue
water quality testing program, storm drain labelling, and Central Michigan Sustainable Business

Mid-MEAC does not employ any full-time staff, and relies heavily on volunteers and board members
to keep the organization alive and functioning.
Specific programs and projects requiring additional support are contracted out on an as-needed
basis.
