May 23, 2007 - Walk & Bike To School Day
Bingham Elementary School on Lansing's Eastside will hold its first ever Walk & Bike to School
Day. For more info, contact marni.barron@sbcglobal.net, or call 214-5684. A walk to school day
is a great way to kick-off a Safe Routes to School Program...
Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is an international movement to make it safe, convenient and fun
for children to bicycle and walk to school. When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from
school is an easy way to get the regular physical activity children need for good health. Safe
Routes to School initiatives also help ease traffic jams and air pollution, unite neighborhoods
and contribute to students’ readiness to learn in school.
Thanks to Michigan's Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Sports, Michigan has
come a long way in developing a Safe Routes To Schools training program and toolkit for
schools who want to become part of this movement.
SR2S federal funds help schools with infrastructure improvements and educational programs
around walking and bicycling to school.
