Smart Commute '08 Challenge Winners
Mid-MEAC is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Smart Commute Company
Challenge, which started May 19, 2008 and ended May 31, 2008. Companies competed in
different size categories, encouraging employees to use walking, bicycling, carpooling, bus,
vanpool, and telecommuting rather than driving alone. A total of 1,159 trips were logged in
this year’s challenge--- pretty impressive considering that most days of this year's challenge
were cold and rainy!!

Smart Commute Continues – Join the Club!
This year’s Smart Commute doesn’t end with the Company Challenge! Continue to
challenge yourself year-round. Log your Smart Commute miles online, and watch for
monthly Smart Commute prize drawings for $50 in cash and prizes. Start by finding out how
much money you’d save, calories you’d burn, and pollution you would prevent using various
Smart Commute modes, then join the Smart Commute Club to log your miles each week.
The club tracks your savings for each week, month, year-to-date, and cumulative impacts for
all club members. Between January and June 2008, members burned more than 70,000
calories, saved $3,335, and prevented 2,884 pounds of CO2 emissions and 15,478 mg of
particulate emissions!
Smart Commute Continues – Other Ways to Get Involved!

• Schedule a brown-bag bicycle commuting class at your workplace. Thanks to a
partnership with League of Michigan Bicyclists, Mid-MEAC now has a wonderful powerpoint

contact Jessica Yorko at yorko446@cs.com or call 214-5684.
• Join the Lansing Bikes! Listserve by emailing jlindenmayer@lmb.org, to post
questions about routes, gear, bikes, people to ride with, and more.
• Check out TCBA’s weekly rides at www.biketcba.org
• Stop by our sponsoring bike shops: MSU Bikes, Denny’s Central Park Bikes in
Okemos, and Spin Street Bike on Turner Street in Old Town.
Thank You – Smart Commute Sponsors, Volunteers, and Friends
Another big round of thanks to volunteer instructors who taught bicycling commuting
classes this spring: Mike Egan, Tim Potter, Mike Unsworth, and Karen Kligman. Thank you
also to our sponsors, Michigan Energy Office, MSU Bikes, Denny’s Central Park Bicycles,
Spin Street Bicycles, Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, and Lansing Community
College. Thanks also to all the exhibitors and visitors who came to the Smart Commute
